How to Select a Coconut

When selecting a coconut hold the fruit to your ear and shake it up and down to listen for liquid sloshing inside. If you do not hear liquid it is an indication that the fruit is too ripe. Inspect the outside of the coconut. If there are cracks, punctures or moisture leaking from the fruit then select another coconut. Choose a coconut that is heavy for its size.  Compare several fruits to feel the difference in weight.

How to Store a Coconut

Store a whole coconut in the refrigerator or at room temperature for up to four months. Once the coconut has been opened the meat can be kept for several days. If it is shredded it should be stored in a sealed container or plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to four days.

How to Freeze Coconut

coconucOpen the coconut and remove the white meat. Use a grater or a food processor to grate or shred the coconut. Place the processed coconut meat in an airtight container or freezer bag removing as much air as possible and then place it in the freezer.

How to Ripen a Coconut

Coconuts do not ripen off the tree so it is important to select brown ripe coconuts.
