How to Select Blueberries

Select blueberries that are firm to the touch and have a solid uniform blue coloring, no red coloring should be present.  If you notice a shimmery silver or dusty coating on the blueberries, that is the natural protectant and a desired quality.  Blueberries should not be soft or watery in texture.  When purchasing blueberries in a container, shake the container to see if the fruit will move freely, if they do not this might be an indication of rotten fruit mixed throughout the package.

How to Store Blueberries

Remove and discard any damaged or decaying blueberries from the group and place remaining berries in a plastic or glass container and cover with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate.  To extend the life of the blueberries place a folded paper towel in the bottom of the container to collect extra moisture and condensation.  Do not wash blueberries until you plan to eat them.  The extra moisture will speed up deterioration.  Stored in the refrigerator blueberries can last up to a week.

How to Freeze Blueberries

Wash blueberries under cool water in a colander, allow sufficient draining, then spread berries in a single layer on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer.  When the berries are frozen place them in an airtight container or freezer bag and return them to the freezer.  Some claim that blueberries should not be washed until they have been removed from the freezer and thawed out.  If you find that your blueberries have tough skin after washing and freezing then you might try not washing them before freezing.

How to Ripen Blueberries

Unripe blueberries are sour to eat. To speed up the ripening process of blueberries place them in a brown paper bag and fold the top of the bag over several times. Store the bag in a cool dark place, such as a pantry or basement.  The berries will produce ethylene gas which will help the ripening process.
